Every hunter in Texas (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971 must complete Hunter Education to legally hunt in Texas.
9 is the youngest age for certification; by age 17 everyone is required to have it.
Certification is lifetime and the Texas Hunter Education certification is reciprocal in all of North America and several other countries.
State of Texas fee for certification is $15.00 (there may be additional class or range fees, depending on location)

Who needs Hunter Education?
Every hunter in Texas (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971 must complete Hunter Education to legally hunt in Texas.
If you were born on or after September 2, 1971 and you are:
- Under 9 years of age, you must be accompanied*.
- Age 9 through 16, you must successfully complete hunter education, OR
you must be accompanied* - Age 17 and over, you must successfully complete hunter education.
{Accompanied means: By a person who is at least 17, who is licensed to hunt in Texas, who has passed hunter education or is exempt (born before Sept. 2, 1971), and you must be within normal voice control}
Hunter Education Facts:
- Certification is lifetime.
- Texas certification is reciprocal in all of North America, Canada, Mexico, and several other countries where Hunter Education is required.
- Texas certification is honored by other states, provinces, and countries requiring Hunter Education.
- You will also need proof of Hunter Education as a non-resident license-buyer in other states, provinces and countries.
- You must carry proof of Hunter Education certification on your person while hunting.
Note: Failure to carry proof of certification while hunting is a Class C, Parks and Wildlife Code Misdemeanor which is punishable by a fine not less than $25 nor more than $500.
- Minimum age for certification is 9 years of age.
- Cost for Hunter Education certification is $15.00 – paid to INSTRUCTOR on day of class.
- “Mandatory” hunter education became law in 1988.
- Since 1972, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department has offered hunter education courses and has certified over 1.5 million students!
- The course covers the core standards in Firearm, Hunting and Outdoor Safety, Hunting Responsibilities and Wildlife Conservation.
